Manufacturing remains the driving force for the local economy. The area is known for its entrepreneurial spirit, as a place where many people have started companies from scratch and guided them to become major employers and contributors to the community's welfare.

Although the recreational vehicle industry represents the single largest portion of the manufacturing sector, the Elkhart area offers a variety of production plants in such areas as pharmaceuticals and over-the-counter consumer drugs, electronic components, manufactured housing, plumbing valves and fittings, automotive goods, fabricated metals and is the “Band Instrument Capital of the World.”

Elkhart County is also home of one of the largest Amish settlements in the United States, and there are many opportunities to enjoy and learn about the plain people. Elkhart County offers something for everyone- from enjoying the rivers and lakes, to bargain hunting at Shipshewana, to finishing your Ph.D (or starting it!), to attending fairs and festivals with friends and family.
